Question:I am currently a runner and cyclist. I have a history of swimming in my
past. I am beginning the process of investigating an simultaneous
training program to compete in triathlons and wondered if anyone had a
reccomendation for a written training guide?
Answer:
Look in magazines like Triathlete and Inside Triathlon for books. IT
currently has a Velo catalog with a lot of books in it. Some of the
better books are: Swim, Bike, Run by Glen Town (in Velo), and Triathlon
edited by Rod Cedaro (not in Velo, says on the cover that Tri-Fed endorses
this one. Also Tinley's Winning Guide to Sports Endurance is very good.
It won't help a whole lot in the way of specific schedules but the info in
it is good to know.
I found most of these books at my local bookstore, but it probably will be
necessary to mail order them.
I'd go to the library and check there first. I found Dave Scott's book
to be the best." Triathlons for Ordinary Mortals" is good also.
I read all that was available there and then went to used book
stores.
A couple of the triathlon books that I've found usefully are Scott
Tinley's new one, and "Serious training for serious athletes" by Rob
Sleamaker. Tinley's is a great introduction to triathlons, and giving
training and diet tips. The book by Sleamaker is aimed at a slightly more
advanced audience, and discusses the nuts and bolts of designing a
personal training program. His book not only looks at triathlons, but
other enduranace sports such as cycling, running, and cross-country
skiing.
How about a couple of excellent books from down under??
