Question:About 15 years ago I had a pair of running gloves that had 1 lb total
weight in them (.5 lb on the back and .5 lb in the palm which was
removable). They were made out of leather-like and mesh materials and
had half-fingers so you could wear them year round.
I'm looking for something similar and can't find anything. Does anyone
know if anything like this is still available?
Answer:
It could be that they are not available because they have been proven to
have no (if not negative) training effect. Do a google search for "running
with weights" and you'll see what I mean.
If you want to run with run with weights, try the weighted vest.
Yes, you can find those "Running Weight Gloves" in the "PRE-injury" department.
... Its right next to the "sidelined" department and on the way to surgery.
Wow, you seem to have a pretty strong opinion about these gloves and devices like
them. I'm curious why. Intuitively I don't see why running with weights should
pose a threat. But medically speaking, I only fall back on intuition when there
aren't good studies of lots of people with real-life results, good or bad. What
is the real track record of hand-weighted running? I'd be grateful to know.
The screw up your stride and add additional weight to each footfall.
With running an impact sport, it's best not to mess with either of
these. Power hiking, hill climbing ok, these minimize the impact.
Anecdotal but interesting. I used to run with an Orthopod and
Podiatrist. When asked about running with weights, they would
answer in unison, "don't but if you insist, make your appointment now".
Dr Leonard Schwartz who "wrote the book" if you like, on hand weights in his
book "The Heavyhands Walking Book" does not seem to advocate running and the
use of hand weights, for walking yes, and in a particular fashion. Although
I see a number of runners pumping them in short sprints. I have given it a
go (two 5 pounders) and find most certainly taxes the system particularly
breathing and that only pumping from below weight to shoulder height
personally cannot see any harm in it, although I peter out after three miles
of jogging (24 minutes) I are not sure of any benefit in this case either
aside, again from increasing exercise intensity.
With walking it increases the intensity (Radically) as a low impact
exercise and (IMHO) is good to add to a routine of doing a high impact
exercises such as jogging and allowing proper recovery time to body parts
such as joints while continuing exercise and I believe if you follow the
good Doctors instructions (precautions) it is as safe an exercise as one can
do and most certainly has the added benefit of increasing ones VO2 max to
its fullest
I think the most important reason against hand weights is you won't do it.
Meaning your mind will tell you, "I don't like this." It slows the arm motion
down, causing the legs to not move with the speed that the arms "feel" they are
pumping ... it works contrary to your mental relaxing ... To me its like
jumping off a cliff. I don't need to do it to know its not a good idea. But,
I would like to hear of success using them. I designed a program of using
weights with running back in 1973, but quickly gave it up.
